Scuba Getaway: Cocos Island

diving Overview

Off the coast of Costa Rica is Cocos Island, a rich oasis of thick jungle and sheering waterfalls. Cocos Island, also nicknamed Isla del Coco, means “Island of Sharks”. Here you will find the famous waves of hammerheads swimming through the blue, also found are packs of whitetip reef sharks, and marbled stingrays. Occasionally you will even find whale sharks, and manta rays swimming around the surrounding pinnacles.

Cocos Island is one of the world’s best scuba diving destination for diving with big fish. There are at least 11 species of stony corals, but no true coral reefs are present. The underwater terrain consists of boulders, pinnacles and seamounts of sloping rocky substrate without a lot of colour. Diving in these waters mean deep, open ocean dives, with some possibilities of swells, strong currents and low visibility. The amazing marine life is attracted to these water conditions and is the big draw for diving in these waters, but these conditions make the diving appropriate only for the advanced skill level.

A typical dive at Cocos is to drop down to a depth of 80 to 100 feet and look for a shark cleaning station. These cleaning stations for the hammerhead sharks, here you will find King angelfish, butterfly fish and other small fish going to work cleaning the big sharks. Massive schools of pelagic fish are seen on every dive, schools of big-eyed jacks, barracuda, snappers and grunts. There is even the chance of seeing orcas, tiger sharks, dolphins, wahoo and sailfish!
